SignatureFD’s contribution to UGA’s Financial Planning program helped us build out space that accommodates supervised service-learning engagements between students and clients, including financial counseling and tax assistance. UGA’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program (UGA VITA) provides assistance to hundreds of low-income taxpayers in Athens and around the state of Georgia through virtual services offered in conjunction with UGA Cooperative Extension. UGA VITA virtual services have always been offered from the SignatureFD Observation Room in the Charles Schwab Financial Planning Center (Schwab Center). This year, our long-time community partner that had hosted in-person VITA went in a different direction, and we were left without a spot to provide services in the local community. Providentially, the space that SignatureFD helped renovate proved to be sufficient. We utilized every available square foot in the renovated space, and we ended up helping over 900 individuals and families in the local community prepare and file their tax returns. We also helped over 600 households in rural parts of Georgia through virtual services. It was a record-setting year in terms of the number of people helped, cost efficiency of services provided, and output per student and up supervisory staff.
