Founded in 2021 to honor the life and legacy of Bill Simpson, the Bill Simpson Foundation is dedicated to continuing his pioneering spirit by supporting causes that align with his values. Known as a trailblazer in motorsports safety, Bill revolutionized the industry with over 200 innovations, including three generations of fire suits that have protected countless drivers. His legacy extends far beyond the racetrack, now living on through the Foundation’s philanthropic efforts.
Last year, the Indiana-based Foundation partnered with SignatureFD to enhance its impact and help ensure the responsible stewardship of its financial and philanthropic resources. To support the Foundation’s evolving vision, SignatureFD’s Philanthropic Advisor, Elizabeth Burdette, and Wealth Advisor, Russ Cearley, worked closely with the Board of Directors to host their first strategic retreat. Held in Annapolis, Maryland, at the site of one of the Foundation’s beloved grantee organizations – Chesapeake Region Accessible Boating (CRAB) – the retreat provided a thoughtful space for reflection and planning.
During the retreat, Elizabeth and Russ guided the Board through critical discussions on philanthropy and governance. Together, they developed a grantmaking strategy designed to strengthen the Foundation’s impact while staying true to Bill Simpson’s enduring legacy. The team also helped clarify roles and responsibilities among Board members, helping solidify a solid framework for decision-making and future growth.
